Privacy policy

Built With Science Holdings Corp. (“Built With Science”, “we”) runs this body-fat research study. Regen Recovery, at 1433 Cedar Cottage Mews, Vancouver, BC, is our partner clinic, where DEXA scans, measurements and photos take place.

When you apply for a DEXA scan

• Your name, email, age, sex, height and weight.
• Your answers to two safety questions (pregnancy, and recent contrast or nuclear scans).
• How you heard about us, if you tell us.

If you're approved

• Your legal name, date of birth and phone number, so the clinic can book you.
• Whether you've paid. Stripe handles your card. We never see your card number.
• Your appointment time.

At the clinic

• Your DEXA scan results and tape measurements.
• Photos of you in form-fitting underwear: front, side and back.
• A short pre-scan questionnaire.
• Your consent record: the version you signed, your name, and the time.

If you take part online

• Your email and a password. Our sign-in provider holds the password; we never see it.
• Your age, sex, ethnicity, height and weight, and, if you choose, your training history and your own body-fat estimate.
• Tape measurements you take yourself.
• Three photos, with the camera details stored in each file (such as the time taken), but not location.
• Your consent record, including your browser type and a shortened form of your IP address.

• To develop and calibrate software that estimates body fat from photos, and to measure how accurate it is.
• To book and manage your DEXA visit, and to send you your results and study emails.
• For academic publication, only if we ask you separately and you agree. We may email you to ask.

We never sell your personal information, and we never publish an identifiable image of you.

Faces are blurred before researchers see your photos. Researchers see photos identified by a number, never your name, email or measurements.

If you take part online, location information is removed from each photo on your device, before upload.

Only the people and services the study needs, and only for that purpose:

• Regen Recovery, our partner clinic: your legal name, date of birth and phone number to book your visit, through the clinic's booking system (Jane). Clinic staff collect your study data at the visit.
• Stripe processes your payment, in the United States.
• Amazon Web Services hosts our systems, stores your data and sends our emails, in Canada.

Your full record is seen only by our study coordinators and the clinic staff running your visit.

Study data is stored encrypted in Canada (Amazon Web Services, Canada Central). Payment details are handled by Stripe in the United States.

• Applications that aren't approved: deleted 30 days after they close.
• Your legal name, date of birth and phone number: removed 30 days after your visit.
• Your booking record: kept for 180 days after your visit, in case of a payment dispute, then deleted.
• Your study data: kept while the research uses it, or until you ask us to delete it.
• Backups: deleted data leaves our backups within 35 days.
• Your consent record: kept as evidence of what you agreed to.

You can ask to see or correct your information, withdraw your consent, or have your data deleted, at any time. You can also decline at the clinic before you sign, without giving a reason.

If you take part online, you can withdraw or delete your data yourself from the Account page after signing in. Otherwise, email us at support@builtwithscience.com. We may ask you to confirm your identity.

Two limits: work already done with your data (an accuracy analysis, or a calibrated version of the software) can't be undone person by person, and once your data is deleted we can no longer send you your results.

You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or your provincial privacy commissioner.

You must be 18 or older to take part.

We'll post any changes here and update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use your data, we'll email you first.
